Penny’s Band is one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from Northern Ireland’s music scene. Formed in 2023 through a chance encounter at a charity fundraiser, the band has quickly built a reputation for their electrifying live performances and anthemic storytelling. Their sound blends raw energy with heartfelt narratives, reflecting both their personal experiences and the cultural heartbeat of Northern Ireland.
The story began when lead guitarist Ewan McElhinney’s band, Tyred Ping Pong, needed a last-minute bassist for a fundraiser at a local church. Alex Talbot stepped in, and something just clicked. That spontaneous gig set the foundation for what would become Penny’s Band, now consisting of lead singer and rhythm guitarist Alex Talbot, lead guitarist Ewan McElhinney, bassist Benjamin McNeill, and drummer Noah McBurney.
Their debut single, That’s Not The Girl I Met, dropped on June 28th, kicking off a breakout year. After a summer packed with gigs at venues like the Oh Yeah Centre, Ulster Sports Club, and Empire Music Hall, the band followed up with their second release on December 1st, further cementing their presence in the local scene.
Beyond the music, the band has proven they know how to build something from the ground up. In true DIY fashion, they self-organized and sold out their first headline show at the Union Bar—without the backing of promoters. A packed-out room, a crowd singing every word, and a band proving they’re more than just another new name on the scene.
So, who is Penny? A hidden band member? A muse? Someone from their past? The truth is… no one really knows. And if you ask them, they’ll just smile and keep you guessing.
