Pete MacGowan

Acoustic // Carrick-on-Suir, Kilkenny

Born in Lincolnshire to a Lancashire lad and a Tipperary mam, Pete grew up all over England.

Pete came to Ireland in the late 1990s to paint his grandfather's house. He hasn't finished the decorating yet...But he has been singing all this time...

Pete MacGowan has played regularly in pubs across the counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary and Waterford.

Pete has also played at festivals in Chablis, Carcassonnne, Bratislava, London and of course, at the Clancy Brothers Festival in Carrick-on-Suir, and played support to John Spillane, Charlie McGettigan, Jimmy Crowley, Jim McKee and the Frank and Walters.

Stop the Clocks...

Pete MacGowan's music is full of raw emotion, with insightful and poignant lyrics, tapping deep in the psyche of the lost, the redeemed, and the irredeemable. His songs tell the stories of liars, cheats and lovers, of time lost and time regained, of friendship and love, loss and separation, and all with an honesty and intensity that cuts deep.

'I love Pete's CD… well written songs full of beautifully observed details, simple arrangements, performed with passion and honesty,' Kieran Goss.

With songwriting that seamlessly blends folk and blues, heartrending lyrics and a compelling performance, Pete MacGowan’s is a truly distinctive voice.

Pete has paired up for one of the songs with Breege Phelan who is rapidly gaining a reputation as a unique, powerful yet tender and passionate folk and blues singer. Breege’s voice is the perfect foil for Pete’s in the duet, ‘Solomon’s Love’.

‘I was struck by the lovely uncluttered style of his live performance and am glad to say that he has maintained this on his EP Stop the Clocks. With just an acoustic guitar, a harmonica and a light dusting of percussion and vocals from Breege Phelan he has recreated the essence of his live performance. From the light airiness of Small Café to the more serious Bury ‘Em Deep, this is a collection of songs for all to cherish,’ Charlie McGettigan.

This acoustic EP features Pete MacGowan on lead vocals, guitars and harmonica, and Breege Phelan on lead and backing vocals. All five songs are originals inspired by the folk, blues and roots music from Ireland and the UK, and from Europe across the Atlantic to North America.
