Synthpop miserablists Yossarian Lives recently released new single 'Leagues' and its accompanying video. Past highlights include supporting indie-pop legends The Magnetic Fields in the Olympia Theatre and winning Dave Fanning’s 'Fighting Chance’ song competition with the song 'A Big Enough Stick For The Moon'.
Yossarian Lives began in 2007 as Rob Shiels’ solo project. He recorded three albums’ worth of material but crippling perfectionism saw them all destroyed before release. It wasn’t until 2011’s ‘Out, Demon Doubt!’ LP that Rob built up the confidence to recruit three new members (including two Doctors, in case of emergency) who were instrumental in developing the project.
With the expansion to a four-piece, Yossarian Lives' initial folk-pop leanings have given way to a broader musical palette, which ranges from the piano-driven melancholia of Christmas single ‘You’re Not Quite Her’ to the electronic miserablism of 'Leagues’. Two constants throughout their material are a clever lyricism that avoids cliché and a McCartney-esque appreciation of pop melodies.
